BHive X validates an intelligent aggregation platform for second-life batteries

BeePlanet Factory, in partnership with the Industry Association of Navarre (AIN), has completed the BHive X project with technical and economic results that confirm the robustness of the developed platform. The initiative, aimed at transforming stationary storage systems using second-life batteries into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), has surpassed its key milestones and is now ready to operate under the demands of the Spanish electrical system.

Proven economic efficiency

One of the most significant breakthroughs in this phase has been the validation of the new facility-level energy management optimizer. Comparative analyses conducted on a standard BeePlanet installation demonstrate that the developed strategy reduces energy costs compared to conventional management strategies. This result, based on real-world data, allows for an estimation of the economic value that BHive X can provide to industrial companies that incorporate storage into their facilities.

Robust communications and high availability

The communications architecture developed, based on MQTT protocols and a cloud control API, has passed real-world tests with clients, ensuring link availability of over 95% at the aggregation node. This level of availability is a necessary condition to meet the real-time requirements demanded by electrical system control centers.

Artificial intelligence for energy forecasting

Various regression models such as XGB, Random Forest, and neural networks are analyzed, and the one with the best results for each installation is applied, demonstrating the ability to predict consumption and renewable generation with a 15-minute operational resolution. This predictive capability allows for the optimization of battery charge and discharge cycles based on market conditions, improving both the economic performance and the grid utility of the systems.

Industrial-grade cybersecurity

The platform incorporates a Zero Trust architecture implemented via mTLS and X.509 digital certificates, ensuring that 100% of communications are encrypted under TLS protocols. This security layer eliminates the risks of identity spoofing in remote battery control, a critical requirement for the operation of distributed assets in the electricity market.

Integration with Red Eléctrica de España

Work has been carried out on the integration of grid balancing services, analyzing the technical requirements and communication mechanisms necessary for VPP participation. This work has enabled progress in defining the architecture and adapting the system to applicable standards and procedures.
