The Charging Infrastructure Challenge

Power Where It Wasn’t Possible Before

The rollout of high-power EV charging stations is often limited by a key factor: low electrical capacity at the connection point. This is especially common in transit areas or rural locations, where the grid is not prepared to support intensive loads.

That was exactly the case in A Gudiña, a strategic point on the Atlantic Corridor, where Iberdrola | bp pulse planned to install a charging station with five chargers:

  • 4 chargers of 400 kW
  • 1 charger of 50 kW
  • Total: 1,650 kW of installed charging power

However, the available contracted power at that location was just 250 kW, and it was already being shared with a fuel station and a restaurant. That made it impossible to operate the chargers simultaneously without an advanced technical solution.

The Solution

Energy Storage + Smart Management: The Key to Fast Charging

To solve the power limitation, we installed our BCube® Compact energy storage system, with a capacity of 1,284 kWh and a discharge power of 600 kW. We integrated it with our proprietary energy management system, BHive®.

The key lies in dynamic energy management. Our EMS monitors the real-time consumption of the entire site — including the fuel station and the restaurant — and BHive® automatically adjusts energy delivery to the EV chargers, combining input from both the grid and the storage system.

🔌 Real-life operation example:
The system currently runs using just 70 kW of grid power to feed the batteries and chargers, ensuring stable and efficient operation without needing to upgrade the grid connection.

In just the first 7 days after commissioning, 1,961 kWh of EV charging was delivered.

The Results

Up to 730 kW of simultaneous power

By combining 130 kW from the grid with 600 kW from the BESS, the station can operate all 5 of its chargers simultaneously without being limited by the contracted power capacity.

Dynamic real-time management

BHive® distributes power across the 5 chargers based on real-time consumption and demand, preventing bottlenecks when multiple vehicles are charging simultaneously.

Grid and battery balance

The system automatically determines how much energy to draw from the grid versus the BESS, maximizing efficiency while ensuring the simultaneous charging of multiple vehicles.

Infrastructure expansion savings

By leveraging BESS to manage peak demand, you avoid the costly need to increase your contracted grid power. The solution scales without the need for additional electrical infrastructure.
