Solar Surplus Optimization at Extremadura I-II-III Photovoltaic Plant for ACCIONA Energy
ACCIONA Energía has trusted BeePlanet to implement an innovative energy storage solution at its Extremadura I-II-III photovoltaic plant, located in Almendralejo (Badajoz). Through the installation of two BCube systems, we have integrated a hybrid storage system, combining second-life Silence electric motorcycle batteries in one of them and new electric vehicle batteries in the other. This solution allows ACCIONA to maximize the use of its renewable energy and promote a circular economy model

Context

The Extremadura I-II-III photovoltaic plant, operated by ACCIONA Energy, is a renewable generation facility with a total capacity of 125 MWp, designed to provide clean energy to a wide range of customers. Committed to leading the energy transition, ACCIONA Energy was looking for a solution that would not only optimize the use of the solar surplus generated, but would also reduce its dependence on fossil sources.

Challenge

The main challenge was to implement an energy storage system (BESS) capable of:

  • Capturing and storing excess solar energy, avoiding losses.
  • Release energy based on demand, ensuring stability in the network.
  • Promoting the circular economy, reusing second-life batteries for stationary storage.
  • Comparing the performance of recycled and new batteries, generating key information for future projects.

Solution

We design and implement twos tailor-made solutions based on our bCube containerized systems, optimized to adapt to the needs of ACCIONA Energy:

  • BCube container equipped with 450 batteries from Silence electric motorcycles, adapted by our team specifically, for this project.
  • BCube container with new batteries from electric vehicles, ensuring optimal and stable performance

Both systems offer a combined capacity of 2 MW/5MWh, allowing:

  • Capture and store surplus solar energy in real time.
  • Release energy according to demand or in the face of network disturbances.
  • Take advantage of existing resources, promoting the circular economy.

Advantages offered by this collaboration

📌 Optimizing the use of renewable energy: The BCube system captures solar surplus and stores it for later use, ensuring a more stable and efficient energy supply.

📌 Network stability: The storage and release of energy according to the needs of the grid improves its stability and security, offering a reliable solution for times of high demand or unforeseen peaks.

📌 Circular economy in action: The use of batteries from electric motorcycles extends their life cycle, transforming them into a valuable resource for energy storage, reducing waste and promoting a more sustainable model.

📌 Key Information for Innovation: The project makes it possible to compare the performance between recycled and new batteries, providing critical data for future energy storage developments.

At BeePlanet, we firmly believe that the future of energy is sustainable, efficient and circular. Our collaboration with ACCIONA Energy not only optimizes the use of solar surplus, but also establishes a replicable circular economy model in the energy sector.
