The Challenge

The Extremadura I-II-III photovoltaic plant, operated by ACCIONA Energy, is a renewable generation facility with a total capacity of 125 MWp, designed to provide clean energy to a wide range of customers. Committed to leading the energy transition, ACCIONA Energy was looking for a solution that would not only optimize the use of the solar surplus generated, but would also reduce its dependence on fossil sources.

The main challenge was to implement an energy storage system (BESS) capable of:

  • Capturing and storing excess solar energy, avoiding losses.
  • Releasing energy based on demand, ensuring grid stability.
  • Promoting the circular economy, reusing second-life batteries for stationary storage.
  • Comparing the performance of recycled and new batteries, generating key information for future projects.

The solution

We designed and implemented two custom solutions based on our containerized BCube®systems, optimized to adapt to ACCIONA Energía's needs:

  1. BCube container equipped with 450 batteries from Silence electric motorcycles, specifically adapted by our team for this project.
  2. BCube container with new batteries from electric vehicles, ensuring optimal and stable performance.

Both systems offer a combined capacity of 2 MW / 5MWh, allowing for:

  • Capture and store surplus solar energy in real time.
  • Release energy based on demand or grid disturbances.
  • Leverage existing resources, promoting the circular economy.

The Results

Optimizing renewable energy use

The system captures surplus solar energy and stores it for later use, ensuring a more stable and efficient energy supply.

Grid stability

Storing and releasing energy according to grid needs improves stability and security, providing a reliable solution for high demand or unforeseen spikes.

Circular economy in action:

Using batteries from electric motorcycles extends their lifecycle, transforming them into a valuable resource for energy storage, reducing waste, and promoting a more sustainable model.

Key insights for innovation

The project allows for performance comparisons between recycled and new batteries, providing critical data for future energy storage developments.
